Biography
Damir Kamenar (Osijek, 1989) is a Croatian visual artist who lives and works in Zagreb. He graduated in primary education with a visual culture module from the University of Zadar (2019) and subsequently completed his studies in applied graphics at the Academy of Fine Arts, University of Zagreb (MA, 2021), in the class of Svjetlan Junaković. At the centre of his work are drawings (especially ink on paper) and wood reliefs, in which he builds motifs from nature and imagination: forest scenes, branches, roots, and 'insignificant' fragments of landscape are isolated and amplified, directing the viewer's gaze toward the detail rather than the whole. Such motifs often acquire a dark, enigmatic atmosphere and a strong sense of inner tension, where the texture and rhythm of the line carry equal weight as the scene itself. He has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Croatia; among his most notable presentations are the exhibition 'Goleti' (Zagreb City Libraries, 2021) and the cycle 'Ništa nisam propitivao' (Croatian Natural History Museum / Scena Amadeo programme, 2025), which further affirmed his distinctive approach to 'nature as psychological space' – a place where ordinary scenes are transformed into carriers of wonder and deeper meaning.
